Papers, 1633-1774.

This collection consists of deeds, a plan, and two record books concerning lands in and around Pemaquid encompassing the towns of Bristol and Bremen, Maine. This territory was the subject of much controversy, being claimed by two parties; one claim was founded in the 1625 purchase of land from the Indians by John Brown, and the other (to which these papers pertain) in the form of a grant by the Plymouth Company, know later as the Council for New England. The collection includes a copy of the 1633 indenture or patent for the land, granted to Robert Aldworth and Giles Elbridge by the New England Council and a 1657 deed for the lands which, through a series of purchases and inheritances came into the possession of the wife, children, and other relations of Nicholas Davison, of Charlestown, Mass. They were known as the Pemaquid proprietors or the Bristol company under the "Drowne Claim." Shem Drowne (1693-1774), of Boston, served as agent for the proprietors. John Chandler (1693-1762), a prominent Worcester resident, was among these proprietors. Two record books of the proprietors, from 1743 to 1768 and 1768 to 1774, document the distribution and conveyance of these lands. Also included in the collection is a 1762 plan of High Island, Me., executed for Shem Drowne, as well as a 1752 "Deed of Division" in which the partition of the lands is determined for all of the heirs of the proprietors, with the exception of Adam Winthrop.
